Each year, Saks Fifth Avenue and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, host a shopping weekend through their stores nationally to benefit women’s cancers research.

This year’s Saks Fifth Avenue’s KEY TO THE CURE shopping weekend was held from Thursday, October 16th through Sunday, October 19th and Gwyneth Paltrow was the national ambassador for the event. The Abramson Cancer Center and Living Beyond Breast Cancer were the local beneficiaries for the Bala Cynwyd store.

Thanks to the efforts, activism, enthusiasm, and support of this event through shopping, our committee members and friends have helped this national event become a premier fundraiser and focal point for women battling breast, ovarian, and other cancers.

The main entertainment for the weekend was the Kick Off Party on Thursday, October 16th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Saks. The main entertainment that evening was a men’s fashion show where men in the community, including faculty members at the Abramson Cancer Center, local celebrities like Coach Mo Cheeks, and our very own Sean Rooney, participated to make it a fun attraction. There was also food, drinks, and silent auction items that were donated by local businesses. The evening was a huge success with close to 250 attendees. Even in these difficult economic times, it was truly a fantastic evening, where people came together to support an important cause very near and dear to our hearts.

KELLY ROONEY FOUNDATION RAISES $175,000 at 2nd ANNUAL GOLF OUTING & BANQUET

Newly-established foundation pours approximately $350,000 into cutting-edge breast cancer research since 2006

WAYNE, Pa. (May 14, 2008) – The Kelly Rooney Foundation held its 2nd annual golf outing and banquet on May 12 at Overbrook Golf Club in Villanova, Pa. Despite the presence of a spring Nor’easter which forced the cancellation of golf, the event raised $175,000 for the Kelly Rooney Breast Cancer Research Fund at the University of Pennsylvania. The golf portion of the program has been rescheduled for Monday, June 30 at Radnor Valley Country Club and Overbrook Golf Club.

Since its founding in 2006, the Foundation has raised an unprecedented $350,000 for breast cancer research and awareness & education programs. At the outing, Dr. Lynn Schuchter, Professor of Medicine & Program Leader of the Clinical Investigations Program at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, shared the progress of the research, which focuses intently on understanding the increase in breast cancer prevalence in women under the age of 40.

In addition to the research at University of Pennsylvania, the Foundation also funds an education program for school-age girls, facilitated by breastcancer.org, called Basic Breast Health for Girls. The program answers the questions of today’s adolescent women, who (unlike generations before them) have larger fears about the disease because of its increase in prevalence amongst the young.

About the Kelly Rooney Foundation Kelly O’Brien Rooney, 43, of Wayne, Pa. passed away on July 11, 2006 after a courageous, four-year battle with breast cancer. Kelly and her husband, Sean, created an
amazing and dynamic family during their 15-year marriage, becoming parents to four
daughters (Casey, Molly, Haley and Quinn) and one son (Jack).

Even during the most critical days of her intimate and personal battle with breast cancer, Kelly’s number one priority was not herself -- but her children. Before her passing, Kelly’s primary question for her physicians was how she could prevent her daughters from ever facing the relentless disease. Because of this, the Kelly Rooney Foundation was founded in 2006 and will focus intently on research for young women who have been identified as high-risk for breast cancer.

Making the Most Of Doctor Visits
When her sister Kelly Rooney was battling breast cancer, Erin Dugery went along to doctors' appointments to help make sense of the treatment options. But the medical jargon was often hard to understand, and she often felt she had forgotten important questions her sister needed answered. "On the drive to the appointment, you think of a million things you want to ask, but when you finally have the attention of the doctor it's almost like getting stage fright," says the Philadelphia mother of four.  Read the full article.

Save 2nd Base by Fighting Breast Cancer
    By Anita Brikman

October 17, 2007 - One Main Line family is fighting breast cancer and generating research funds with attention grabbing T-shirts laced with humor.

The Rooney family home in Wayne is full of love, laughter, and the cheerful ruckus of five growing kids. But something, or someone, precious is missing, their mom, Kelly who was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer just before her 40th birthday.

"Kelly was young, vibrant. She was a Philly girl."

Her sister Erin says Kelly's mischievous and sometimes salty sense of humor led her to create some special T-shirts originally designed for her team in the Breast Cancer 3-Day fundraising walk.

"Save 2nd Base" is a tongue-in-cheek reference to a woman's breasts and the strategically placed baseballs certainly get peoples' attention and make them smile.  Read the full article
